First Northumberland padel court to open after £91,000 investment

The padel court at Hexham Tennis club becomes the third in the North East for the rapidly-growing sport

Northumberland is set for its first padel court later this month after an investment of £91,000.

The court will be the third facility of its kind in the North East, following dedicated padel spaces opening in Benton and Durham - and a fourth set to follow in Sunderland this winter.

The sport has grown rapidly in popularity with 250 courts built in the UK between 2022 and 2023. It is simplified as a mash-up of tennis and squash and is played in a space half the size of a tennis court.

Construction on the new court in Hexham started at the end of last month at Hexham Tennis Club. It will sit alongside existing tennis courts and can be used by both members and non-members.

The club worked alongside Northumberland County Council to secure £91,000 funding from S106 Housing Developers Fund. It is expected to be completed in mid-October.

Northumberland county councillor Jeff Watson said: "Padel is great for beginners and young children as well competent racquet sport players and is another fun and sociable way of keeping fit and active. We’re delighted to see construction has started on what is only the third court in the North East."

Bookings for Hexham Padel court will open on Monday October 7. Court hire will be £16 during peak times and £14 off peak, with a 25% discount for Hexham Tennis club members.
