Newcastle about to get a sustained test of European credentials but hold key advantage

The Magpies are set for a difficult run of games following the October international break

by · ChronicleLive

It's been a strange start to the Premier League campaign for Newcastle United and yet the recent draw with Manchester City was a sign of things heading in the right direction.

The Magpies are just outside of the European places heading into the October international break and face a tough run of fixtures when they return to domestic action. Eddie Howe's side narrowly missed out on European football last season as a result of Manchester United winning the Carabao Cup.

Performances so far this season have not yet been at their best, but the draw with Pep Guardiola's side was undoubtedly the most promising of the campaign to date - Anthony Gordon's spot kick ensuring a share of the spoils.

"I think it's a really good place to be considering we've be no where near what we know we can do, "Gordon told TNT Sport after the draw with City. "We've got so much more to give. That's our level, that's our standard now in terms of effort and no matter who we play, we have to stick together and dig in like that."

Newcastle will face easier tests in the weeks to come if you want to compare the clash with reigning Premier League champions, but there next four games are no walk in the park. The Magpies take on Brighton when they return to action following the international break, with Fabian Hurzeler's side likely to be a direct rival for European football this season.

After that, the Toon face a tough double header against London-based clubs. First up, a trip to Stamford Bridge, following by a clash with Arsenal at St James' Park. The Magpies were beaten 3-2 by the Blues in the same fixture last season, while Mikel Arteta's side were beaten 1-0 at St James' Park.

Both sides are competing in European football this season and it's a good opportunity to shown Newcastle's own credentials, having narrowly missed out on continental football. Newcastle will have a fitness advantage heading into those run of games as a result, with both Arsenal and Chelsea in European action.

The Magpies then face Nottingham Forest at the City Ground before another break in Premier League action. There's also a clash with Chelsea in the Carabao Cup to contend with on October 30.
