Arsenal 'refused' to meet Edu's ambitious demand despite offering him lucrative new deal

In a surprising turn of events at the start of the week, Arsenal's sporting director Edu has decided to part ways with the club despite being offered a new lucrative contract. The Brazilian, who has been instrumental in the Gunners' recent ascent, declined the offer to stay on as he seeks a new challenge with more responsibility.

Edu's ambition to climb the ranks at the Emirates was no secret, as he aimed for a higher position than his current role. Although Arsenal were prepared to increase his salary, they were not willing to alter his job title, leaving his responsibilities unchanged, according to the Daily Mail.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that Edu is set to become the CEO of Evangelos Marinakis' group, which would put him in charge of recruitment for clubs including Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos, and Rio Ave. The move is expected to come with a significant pay rise and the increased authority and title that Edu desired during his tenure at Arsenal.

The CEO position at Arsenal has seen changes recently, with Vinai Venkatesham departing less than a year ago and Richard Garlick stepping in to fill the role.

Upon announcing his departure, Edu stated: "This was an incredibly hard decision to make. Now it is time to pursue a different challenge. Arsenal will always remain in my heart. I wish the club and its supporters only good things and all the very best.", reports the Mirror.

The departure of Edu follows a summer transfer window in which the Gunners spent £200m on players such as Kai Havertz, Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber. Despite this loss, Arsenal co-chairman Josh Kroenke expressed his gratitude for Edu's work and insisted that the club will continue to pursue their ambitions.

Kroenke stated: "We respect Edu's decision and thank him for his immense contribution and dedication to drive the club forward. Everyone at the club wishes him well. We are all so fond of him and the positive energy he brings to everything and everyone."

"Change and evolution is a part of our club. We remain focused on our strategy and winning major trophies. Our succession plan will reflect this continued ambition."
