As the country reels from a flood that has left at least 214 people dead, thousands have flocked to devastated areas to help. Anger toward public officials is growing.

In Spain, search efforts are ongoing for those still missing after deadly floods in Valencia and the surrounding area claimed more than 200 lives. Thousands of residents remain without electricity and basic services, depending heavily on volunteers rather than state support.

Spain’s meteorological agency said up to 100 litres per square metre of water could fall in the province of Castellon and the area surrounding the city of Valencia.

Cleanup efforts across flood-stricken Valencia have entered their fifth day with tens of thousands of volunteers handing over to professionals to do the "heavy-lifting with heavy machinery", FRANCE 24's Antonia Kerrigan said, reporting from the Spanish region. Meanwhile the national meteorological agency on Sunday issued a fresh warning for heavy downpours in the region.

Three Brits have been confirmed dead so far from the floods, with the total death toll at 213 - and the numbers are expected to rise further.
