Polling began at 7 am in 16 assembly segments in three border districts of north Kashmir amid tight security.

"For decades, our community, brought here for sanitation work, was denied basic rights, including the right to vote and citizenship of J-K. It is a historic moment for the entire Valmiki community," he said.

This is the maiden assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir after it was made a Union Territory in 2019. The first phase of the elections began on September 18.
