The Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, addressing concerns over Bangladeshi immigration in Assam while emphasising the need to balance immigration control and the rights of indigenous residents.

The Supreme Court declared that those who have entered Assam from Bangladesh on or after March 25, 1971 are all illegal immigrants, who must be identified and deported.

Pertinently, today’s landmark verdict on S6A of Citizenship Act will lhave a significant bearing on the Assam NRC list.

While four judges of the Supreme Court upheld the constitutional validity of Section 6A of the Citizenship Act, Justice Pardiwala gave a dissenting judgment.
