The result is a blow to pro-Western Georgians, and one opposition leader has called the results a "constitutional coup".

The leader of Georgia's opposition United National Movement Tina Bokuchava has said that the country's ruling Georgian Dream party had lost a high-stakes parliamentary election in the country and should concede defeat.

The country’s election commission said Georgian Dream won with 54.08% of votes, while a union of four pro-Western opposition alliances garnered 37.58%.

The vote could decide whether the country pursues its aim of joining the EU or ends up in Russia’s sphere of influence.

The ruling Georgia Dream party won a majority in the vote. The opposition, which fears the country is moving away from the West, says the voting was not fair and that it will not appear in Parliament.
