Measures to tackle Majorca's tourist overcrowding will be in place for the 2025 season, it has been warned. President Marga Prohens stated that "firm and brave decisions" to tackle European Union tourist overcrowding in the Balearics will be taken and applied before the start of the 2025 season.

She said: "We have to listen to the citizens, to listen to a growing and general social discontent that goes far beyond the protests." She went on: "We can no longer grow in volume. We have to talk about limits and we have to talk about containment".

"The tourist is always welcome and well treated on our islands. Tourism has been and will continue to be the main source of wealth generation and income to sustain our well-being for many years," she also added.

She said that the government wants to take a leading role in attracting innovation and investment through its legislation for administrative simplification and the implementation of what she called a "project accelerator unit".

Responding to the move, one said: "I'm guessing that COVID would have had a very sobering effect on people's personal finances if free money hadn't been handed out to all. Maybe, the benefits of tourists and tourism would have been more obvious."

A second local said: "What measures ? I wonder if the measures will be some kind of punishment for visiting the island , in the form of a tax perhaps . Keep going anyway , i'm sure whatever the plan is , it will be a splendid plan."

"What measures?" a third demanded. "More government blowing smoke," another commented. Last month, tourists were greeted by over 100 protesters in Playa de Palma, claiming the beach had turned from sandy to drunken. The campaign group 'Majorca Platja Tour', responsible for the protest, also warned of more protests.
