UK tourists have been issued a Greece travel warning as holidaymakers are advised to "take care of their possessions". European Union holiday hotspot visitors and holidaymakers have been warned over heading to Greece in an alert from the Foreign Office.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) shared new information ahead of the UEFA Europe Conference League this week. The FCDO stated: "Athens will host the UEFA Europa Conference League on Thursday, October 24 between Panathinaikos and Chelsea."

It urged UK holidaymakers to "plan their movement around the city to arrive at the stadium well in advance of the match kick-off". They were also told to "follow the instructions of the local authorities". Tourists were advised to "take care of their possessions, including their passports", too.

"They should be particularly careful in crowded areas and on public transport," the Foreign Office added. It added: "Thefts of passports, wallets and handbags are common on the metro and in crowded tourist places, particularly in central Athens.

"Carry your valuables in different bags and pockets and keep a copy of your passport photo page somewhere safe. When driving on holiday, keep your valuables out of sight and lock your vehicle at all times. Always park in a well-lit area or secure car park.

"Be alert to car crime." Chelsea head into Thursday evening's match in the Greek capital as odds on favourites for victory as they look to get back to winning ways following their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Premier League on the weekend.

Chelsea are now two games without a win having being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Nottingham Forest before the international break, having previously put together a five match winning streak. Panathinaikos head into Thursday evening's match having extended their current run to just one defeat in their last nine in all competitions.
