DVLA rule dubbed 'persecution of pensioners' as older drivers lose major freedoms

A DVLA rule which restricts older motorists driving licence freedoms has been labelled a "persecution of pensioners" as over-70s are set to be impacted by the change

A DVLA regulation that limits the driving licence freedoms of older drivers has been slammed as "persecution of pensioners". Express.co.uk readers have expressed their anger over the policy, which hinders road users' access to certain types of vehicles as they age.

The Older Drivers Forum points out that when motorists renew their licence at 70, they will no longer be granted two driving licence categories. The C1 category for medium-sized vehicles ranging from 3,500kg to 7,500kg and the D1 minibus category will be stripped away.

Over-70s keen on maintaining these categories must undergo a medical check to demonstrate their fitness. While the DVLA rule is longstanding, it may catch those approaching 70 off-guard this year.

Express reader @Dodgerrrr commented furiously: "The persecution of pensioners continues." And @MiniMiner added: "I find it incredible that we are gradually moving the state retirement age towards 70 and yet we seem to also be saying that come 70 we are all decrepit and need to be checked. What about all those from 17 to 70? "

There's a growing sentiment amongst road users that perhaps restrictions are focussed on the wrong age group, with calls for a graduated driving licence system for young newly qualified drivers, which would limit their passenger numbers, reports the Express.

Twitter user @rusty53a commented: "Never mind worrying about drivers over 70 - people should worry about drivers in their teens and early 20s who live a very fast-paced life and are forever checking their phones, not watching the road."

Meanwhile, some veteran motorists pointed out they never drive large vehicles and haven't missed the additional freedom the passes afforded. On the flip side, there were those who supported the DVLA's emphasis on safety.

An Express reader known as @BF stated: "It sounds reasonable to me. Some drivers at 80 are more competent than some at 40, but others are not. If you are competent you will keep your licence, if not, take refresher lessons and be retested. Better than an accident."

Twitter commentator @RussBiker said: "So people of 70+ will have to prove they are safe to drive others and large vehicles - such common sense."
