The Birmingham street named second worst in country for parking fines - as 18 handed out every day

Drivers are unlikely to get away with breaking the rules on this street

A notorious Birmingham road has been named as the second worst in the entire country for parking fines. If drivers are ever tempted to risk parking up without paying or leaving their car on double yellows thinking they can get away with it, they may want to think again if they're on Alum Rock Road.

Over 6,600 parking fines were dished out along the road over the last year - 18 every day on average, as traffic wardens patrol the street looking for rule-breakers. It brought in almost half a million pounds to the city council.

Only a road in Westminster, London, one of the busiest spots in the country near the Houses of Parliament, had more parking fines than Alum Rock Road. The road runs through Saltey and Alum Rock and is lined with shops along sections.

This makes it incredibly busy at peak times and can result in a daily battle for parking spaces. But those who take the risk and break the rules are unlikely to get away with it.

Motorists who park on double yellows, fail to pay parking charges or overstay are slapped with £70 penalties, reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days. The parking hotspots were revealed following a freedom of information request by Select Car Leasing.

Managing director Graham Conway said: “Walking back to your car and seeing that dreaded black and yellow packet stuck to your windscreen is enough to make your heart sink, particularly if you’ve misunderstood the rules rather than chanced your arm. And if you want to avoid that parking ticket gut-punch, it might be in your best interests to swerve these particular UK streets.

Mr Conway added: "With enforcement efforts intensifying, drivers are urged to double-check parking signs and look up their parking options ahead of time. Check council websites or use mobile apps to find available spaces and avoid parking in restricted areas, even if it seems convenient.

"In many of these streets, the sheer volume of traffic and the limited parking spaces create a high-risk environment for drivers. Being more mindful of parking rules can help avoid hefty fines."
