Former MEP Clare Daly to stand in general election

Former Independent MEP Clare Daly has announced that she will stand in the general election in the Dublin Central constituency.

She said that she was contacted by activists from across the constituency asking her to go forward as a candidate for the area.

Ms Daly said Dublin Central has long history of fearless TDs in the tradition of Tony Gregory and Maureen O'Sullivan.

That approach was needed more than ever, she said, as the city is neglected and communities feel abandoned.

She expressed deep concern at the "direction the country is going" and said she believes both the Government and the media are not being properly held to account.
