It would be a shame to have the colder weather stop us from going outdoors? As the summer holiday season has drawn to a close swing, Brits will be eager to escape the confines of their homes and for a cosy getaway.

Nestled in a secluded corner of south Cornwall lies a culinary gem that Jay Rayner has praised as one of his top value recommendations for those visiting the UK coastline. Located on the picturesque Roseland Peninsula, the charming town of St Mawes is home to the esteemed Watch House restaurant.

Occupying a former Customs and Excise building in the town square, the Watch House is situated at the heart of the seafront. According to Jay, this eatery boasts a "hatch serving the very best takeaways in town", offering a mouth-watering "proper slab of golden beer-battered cod and chips" for £12.75, or delectable homemade salmon, pollack and smoked haddock fish cakes for the same price.

Alternatively, if you're in the mood for something quintessentially Cornish, the Watch House also serves "a chippy tradition that we couldn't deny", featuring two Kernow sausage company family recipe sausages in beer batter (or without) accompanied by chips. For those with a penchant for shellfish, a platter of half shell scallops, tiger prawns, mussels, crab claws roasted and dressed with olive oil, chilli, garlic, parsley and lemon is also on offer, reports MyLondon.

St Mawes Castle, one of Henry VIII's best-preserved coastal artillery fortresses dating back to the mid-16th century, overlooks the coast. As you explore the clover-leaf shaped fortress, you'll come across Latin inscriptions dedicated to Henry VIII and his son Edward VI.

Don't miss out on the breath-taking views over the water from the top of the castle keep. The castle grounds also extend down to the Fal Estuary, perfect for a leisurely stroll.

The village provides access to the St Anthony Head walk, part of the South West Coast Path, which guides you around the Roseland Peninsula. For those who enjoy a swim, two beaches are within walking distance from St Mawes.

Summers Beach, the main beach in the village, is a hotspot during the summer months and an ideal location for children to explore rock pools. Tavern Beach, situated just below the Tresanton Hotel, is another family favourite with stunning views of St Mawes bay.

If you're up for a little adventure, the St Mawes Ferry can take you from the fishing village to the lively port of Falmouth around the Carrick Roads.

The Tresanton Hotel also boasts a Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Award-winning restaurant, serving up some of the finest and freshest Cornish produce. Expect to find delicacies such as Porthilly oysters with shallot vinegar, Crab Tian with avocado, quails egg, confit tomato and crostini, Whole lemon sole with mash potato, spinach, mussels, and Brill with mushroom croquette, celeriac and oyster mushrooms

So, if you're in search of a gastronomic getaway from London and fancy some affordable seaside dining, St Mawes is worth checking out.
