An little-known island village is the home of a 'magic' stone which reputedly cures toothache.

Travellers seeking a spot of the beaten track should head to the Inner Hebrides in Scotland where an island village promises tranquility and a chance to mend their ailment. The small settlement of Port Charlotte is secret gem of town close to some of the island's distilleries. It is described as "best-preserved and most attractive village on the local Islay website and has terraces of whitewashed cottages looking over Loch Indaal. It was originally designed to to accommodate workers from Lochindaal Distillery when it was built in 1828. But the Daily Record reports your toothache can be cured by visiting the strange 'Tooth Stone'. It is just outside the village and has long been believed to cure mouth-related ailments — all you need to do is hammer a nail into the stone.

For those who do not want to take such drastic action there is plenty else to see and do around Port Charlotte. There is even a hotel where you can enjoy a hot meal and a dram of whisky by the fire. If you are interested in learning more about the history of the village and the surrounding area, then a trip to the Museum of Islay Life is definitely recommended. It is home to a major collection of fascinating artefacts, photos, and stories, the museum traces Islay's journey all the way from prehistory to the present day.

The Islay Nature Centre, meanwhile, is the place to head for some tips on spotting local wildlife. With a variety of exhibits, aquariums, and even a 'laboratory', it is also the perfect destination to spend a rainy afternoon. The village is also home to the Port Charlotte Hotel, which offers both comfy beds for the night and tasty meals if you are needing a refuel. As well as stocking a huge selection of whiskies, beers, and gins, the cosy venue serves up some world-class seafood.
