Wales train crash: Shocking pictures capture devastation after man killed in train smash

British Transport confirmed the dead man's next of kin have been informed and 15 people had been taken to hospital after the low-speed collision between two trains near Llanbrynmair, Powys

This is the devastation left after two trains smashed into each other on a rural line in Wales on Monday night.

One man died and 15 other people suffered injuries in the crash, which led to the cancellations of services between Shrewsbury in Shropshire and Aberystwyth, Ceredigion. Emergency services including paramedics, firefighters and police rushed to the scene upon the impact.

British Transport confirmed the dead man's next of kin have been informed after the low-speed collision. They said none of the injuries were believed to be life threatening or life changing. Police said all passengers had been evacuated from both trains.

Dyfed-Powys Police had asked motorists to avoid the A470, from Carno to Commins Coch, as it has been closed. Drivers have been asked to find alternative routes. It has been claimed on social media that the collision resulted in "mostly minor injuries" with a conductor and driver suffering worse injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening. The claims haven't been confirmed by the emergency services at this stage.

The National Police Air Service for the West and Wales Region said a helicopter from St Athan responded to the train crash. A post on the social media site X said: "The helicopter from St Athan, along with other helicopter agencies and emergency services, responded to the train crash in Llanbrynmair. Our thoughts are with everyone affected. Grateful for the coordinated efforts of all teams on the ground and in the air."

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "Officers were called to the line near Llanbrynmair at 7.29pm today (21 October) to reports of a low-speed train collision involving two trains. Paramedics, fire and rescue, and Dyfed Powys Police are all in attendance and the incident is ongoing."

A joint statement from Network Rail and Transport for Wales has also been released, Wales Online reported. It says: "Emergency services are responding to an incident near Llanbrynmair in Powys, Mid Wales, involving two trains – the 18.31 Transport for Wales service from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the 19.09 Transport for Wales service from Macyhnlleth to Shrewsbury.

"The line is closed as they carry out their work. Our main priority is the safety of our passengers and colleagues, and we are doing all we can to support the emergency services as they respond to the incident. We would encourage passengers to plan ahead and check journeys before travelling via National Rail Enquiries."
