A jealous thug who hacked his love rival to death with a 12in zombie knife in a horrific street attack has been caged for life.

Haseeb Majid knifed Mohammed Duraab Khan 16 times at a Texaco garage in Nottingham on January 31 this year. Emergency services rushed to the scene on Meadow Lane but despite the efforts of medics, Mr Khan, 26, died a short time later.

The brutal attack was captured on CCTV and police tracked Majid, 22, and found him with an injury to his knee which he sustained in the savage attack. He claimed he acted in self-defence and “lost control” but a jury convicted him of murder earlier this month.

Today he was jailed for life and ordered to serve a minimum of 26 years in prison. During the three-week trial at Nottingham Crown Court, jurors heard there was "bad blood" between the pair after Majid's ex-girlfriend "got reacquainted" with Mr Khan.

Mr Khan had spent the day dropping off relatives at Gatwick Airport with his friend and they stopped at the petrol station on the way to buy food.

As Mr Khan’s friend filled up the car, Majid, wearing a black coat and ski mask, ran onto the forecourt. Majid yanked open the driver’s door and made stabbing motions towards Mr Khan who was sitting in the passenger seat.

Mr Khan scrambled out of the car but Majid followed him and repeatedly stabbed him in front of horrified onlookers. The jury heard he was stabbed 16 times with the deepest wound going 22cm (8ins) into his body. He was helped by members of the public and treated by paramedics, but he died at the scene.

Majid was arrested the next morning after the Ford Focus he was travelling in was captured on CCTV doing a U-turn and following Mr Khan’s car.

Mr Khan’s devastated family paid tribute to the “remarkable young man.” In a statement they said: "Duraab was a remarkable young man whose life, though tragically cut short, was filled with love, laughter, and an unyielding dedication to his family and friends.

“Duraab was a man of honour, deeply rooted in the values of his religion and cultural background. He knew how to show respect to his elders, to women, and to children. He lived by a code of honour that defined his every action and interaction.

"His brutal murder has taken away a brother, a friend, a nephew, and a son from those who loved him unconditionally.”

Detective Inspector Kaz Smithson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Mr Khan’s killing at the hands of Majid was savage and completely senseless.

“Majid must also now live with the consequences of what he did that day as he begins a life sentence.”
