Bedford house explosion leaves one dead as huge fire sparks evacuation after 'loud bang'

A person was killed in an explosion in Bedford this morning, as another was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

Bedfordshire Police were called at around 7.30am to Cleat Hill, Bedford, after the incident. Another was taken to hospital with serious injuries as officers evacuated other people from near the scene.

One resident reported hearing feeling a shockwave followed by a loud bang, according to Bedford Independent.

Befordshire Police said on X: "One person is confirmed to have died in an explosion and subsequent fire in Cleat Hill, Bedford this morning (Saturday). A second person was taken to hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

"We have has set up an Emergency Assistance Centre for people who have been evacuated. Enquiries are ongoing to identify the cause of the explosion and residents still in their homes should keep their windows open.

"We understand this incident is very concerning for those who live in the vicinity and are still advising for people to avoid the Cleat Hill area whilst work at the scene continues. Anyone needing extra emotional support can call the Samaritans helpline on 116 123."

Bedford Borough Council said on X: "We have an emergency road closure between Cleat Hill and Kimbolton Road in Bedford. We ask all residents to please avoid the area.

"We have set up an Emergency Assistance Centre for people who have been evacuated. Officers are available at the Emergency Assistance Centre to give advice and arrange support for those who need it."

The incident comes days after a devastating explosion in Newcastle's Benwell and Elswick area, in which seven-year-old Archie York and Jason Laws, in his 30s, were killed. Two terraced homes, said to contain flats, were decimated in the blast and ensuing fire as emergency services rushed to the scene.

Paying tribute on Facebook, Jason's brother, Joseph Laws, said his "heads in bits". He wrote: "One thing I can say you have been the best big brother I could ask for you would be willing to die for me and protected me the past 30 years even when I didn't need protected anymore."
