The Simpson's 'predicted' result of US Presidential election in episode 20 years ago

An episode of the Simpsons that first aired more than two decades ago has attracted attention once again this week ahead of the US election taking place in just a few days time

It's been suggested that the Simpsons may have 'predicted' the outcome of the 2024 presidential election in the US.

Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday next week and cast their ballots to choose the country's next leader. Kamala Harris is the nominee for the Democratic Party and Donald Trump is the nominee for the Republican Party.

Ahead of the election, a previously reported comparison between Harris and the Simpsons character Lisa Simpson has been made on social media once again. It centres on the outfit worn by the politician when she was sworn in as Vice President at the inauguration of Joe Biden in 2021. The outfit included a purple coat and a necklace, which have drawn comparisons to the purple suit and pearl necklace once worn by Lisa in an episode of Fox's animated sitcom.

The episode in question, Bart to the Future, was part of the eleventh season of the long-running TV show, which was created by Matt Groening, and it reportedly first aired back in 2000. During the episode, Lisa's brother Bart Simpson is notably shown a vision of their family's apparent future.

The vision includes Bart discovering that his sister Lisa has become the President of the United States in the future. She's seen sporting her purple suit as she addresses a crowd in a scene, as well as in another set in her residence.

The episode has been referenced again in posts on social media this week ahead of the election. One post on X, formerly known as Twitter, has gone viral on the platform, with it having amassed more than 3.5 million views already.

The tweet, posted by @deronworld, included side-by-side photos of Lisa in her suit and Harris in her purple outfit. Seemingly suggesting that the Simpsons episode has predicted the election result, the poster wrote: "I have no fear." The tweet, which has been liked by others on the platform, also included a screengrab from the episode which showed Lisa sitting the Oval Office. She's heard interacting with her team in the scene and says: "As you know, we've inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump."

Mike Scully, who was a long-running producer on the show, shared his thoughts on the comparison to the Hollywood Reporter earlier this year. The writer said: "The pantsuit may have been a nod to Hillary Clinton at the time, or we were just going for a power look." He then suggested that the colour of the outfit "seemed" to have been a "random choice," potentially by animators, and said that the necklace of pearls was on trend for Lisa as she "always wears them".
