Met Office issues new heavy rain and flooding warning for Greater Manchester

by · Manchester Evening News

The Met Office has issued a new rain warning for Greater Manchester - with flooding likely in some areas.

The fresh yellow weather alert will come into force at 12.30am tomorrow morning (Monday) and last until 8pm in the evening. It covers much of our region, as well as other parts of the North West of England and parts of Wales.

"Heavy rain is expected to cause some flooding and disruption in places on Monday", the Met Office said. Forecasters predict that as the downpours hit Greater Manchester, flooding 'of a few homes and businesses is possible' with travel disruption also expected on the roads, buses and railways.

The forecaster added: "A spell of persistent and at times heavy rain is expected to affect northeast Wales and northwest England during Monday before easing on Monday night. 20-40 mm of rain is expected to fall quite widely with a few places seeing up to 60 mm during the course of the day."

Another new rain warning has been issued for parts of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, the Midlands and the North East of England from 8am tomorrow. This will last until 3am on Tuesday, with a chance of flooding also expected in these areas.

The heavy showers are set to begin sweeping over the UK from this afternoon, starting in the South West of England and moving upwards and eastwards. Strong winds of up to 60mph are also expected in some areas among the 'unsettled spell of weather'.

In our region, the wettest weather is forecast from tonight into tomorrow, with heavy downpours forecast for the majority of the day. The showers are not expected to ease off until Tuesday.

Met Office chief meteorologist Jason Kelly said: "Sunday will bring a return to wet and windy weather across the southern half of the UK. A warning for rain has been issued for southwestern England and south Wales from 1600 on Sunday through to Monday morning.

"Within the warning area 20-30mm of rain is expected quite widely, with up to 50-80mm possible over the higher ground of Dartmoor, south Wales and the Dorset Downs. A yellow warning for wind has also been issued from 0900 to midnight on Sunday.

"The area covers the far southwest of England and western Wales. Gusts of 50-55mph are likely within the yellow warning area, up to 60mph is possible in the most exposed coasts and areas of higher ground."
