All the UK flood warnings and alerts in place as urgent messages issued

by · Manchester Evening News

A number of flood alerts and warnings are in place across the UK today.

The Environment Agency has issued over 140 flood alerts - meaning flooding is possible - and flood warnings - meaning flooding is expected - across the UK on Monday. It comes amidst a heavy period of rain across the country with weather warnings in place by the Met Office.

Yellow rain warnings have been issued by the Met Office covering much of the Midlands and northern England on Monday and Tuesday. One warning covers eastern England between 8am on Monday and 3am on Tuesday, and the other across North Wales and north-west England between 00.30am and 8pm on Monday.

Both warnings forecast 20-40mm of rainfall widely, with 60mm also possible in a few places across North Wales and north-west England and 60-80mm in some areas in eastern England, the Met Office said.

Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said a low-pressure system centred on the heart of the UK had brought the strong winds and heavy rain.

“The focus of that heavier rainfall today is very much the north of England, and parts of the Midlands,” he said. He said the weather remained “unsettled” on Monday in other parts of the UK too.

“Elsewhere, today, it’s a fairly unsettled day of weather with sporadic showers, perhaps a little more dry weather the further southwest you go. But even here still feeling rather cloudy and unsettled for much of the day.”

Environment Agency messages

The Environment Agency issues a flood warning when flooding is expected - and says you should 'act now'. It is issued when forecasts show that flooding is expected from:

  • rivers
  • heavy rain that will cause rivers to flash flood
  • high tides and surges coupled with strong winds at sea

If a flood warning is issued, you should:

  • protect yourself and your loved ones
  • move your loved ones, pets and valuables to a safe place
  • move to higher ground or the upper floor of a building
  • turn off the gas, electricity and water in your home if it’s safe
  • put flood protection equipment in place
  • do as the emergency services tell you
  • help others if it’s safe to do so

A flood alert, which is issued up to 12 hours before flooding, means that flooding is possible so you should prepare now.

The Environment Agency issues a flood alert when forecasts show that flooding may be possible from:

  • rivers
  • high tides, surges or strong winds at sea

If a flood alert is issued, you should:

  • be ready to follow your flood plan
  • have insurance documents and any medications ready
  • avoid walking, cycling or driving through any flood water
  • move any livestock and farming equipment away from areas likely to flood
