The Environment Agency has issued more flood warnings across Greater Manchester, bringing the total to eight. They cover areas along the River Irk from Manchester city centre to Oldham.

This morning there were three flood warnings in place, but that number increased to eight this afternoon following a period of relentless rainfall.

People are being urged to 'avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses' and also to take care while walking, cycling or driving through floodwater.

The Environment Agency said: "Rising river levels are expected to cause flooding throughout the afternoon.

"Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the River Irk, with low lying land and roads expected to be most affected, particularly around some properties adjacent to the River Irk.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and monitoring rainfall and river levels. Start acting on your flood plan if you have one. Take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water."
