Man, 21, in serious condition after being hit by tram as police launch investigation

A man is in hospital in a serious condition after being hit by a tram in Oldham.

The incident happened on the lines close to the Shaw and Crompton Metrolink stop at around 11.20pm last night (Friday). Police said emergency crews descended on the scene after reports of a crash between a tram and a member of the public.

The man, aged 21, was rushed to hospital. He remains there with 'serious, potentially life-threatening injuries'.

An investigation is now underway by Greater Manchester Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit. This morning, the tram line remains blocked between Oldham and Rochdale town centre.

Pictures show a number of police vehicles parked up on Bullcote Lane, close to the tracks near Shaw and Crompton. Officers were spotted carrying out investigations and taking photos on the lines.

Metrolink passengers have been urged to take a different route this morning. Tickets can also be used on bus services or on the Northern train service between Rochdale and Victoria.

In a statement, a GMP spokesperson said: "Shortly before 11.20pm last night (Friday 11 October 2024) we responded to reports of a collision between a tram and member of the public on the tram track near to Bullcote Lane, Oldham. The member of public, a 21-year-old man, has been taken to hospital with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries, where he remains.

"Metrolink services continue to be impacted this morning whilst our Serious Collision Investigation Unit make further enquiries. We appreciate the patience of those who use the service."

A spokesperson for Metrolink said: "We can confirm that following a police incident near Shaw and Crompton late on Friday night, there is currently no service between Rochdale Town centre and Oldham Mumps.

"Tickets and passes can be used on the 59, 57, 81, 83, 149, 182, 409, 411 bus services and Northern train services between Rochdale and Victoria. We will advise customers as soon as services are able to resume."
