Cyclone Dana Live Updates: The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has transformed into a cyclonic storm named Dana and is heading towards the Odisha-Bengal coast. The storm is likely to make landfall between Bhitarkanika park and Dhamra port on October 25, Friday, according to IMD's latest update.

The Meteorological department has issued heavy rainfall alerts for multiple state districts. Consequentially, nearly 10 lakh people from coastal areas prone to the cyclone are being evacuated to relief camps.

Odisha and West Bengal government, Coast Guard, NDRF, and other rescue forces are on alert. All schools in the coastal districts of Odisha and West Bengal have been shut, and the states have also started the evacuation process from coastal districts that are likely to bear the brunt of the cyclone.

A depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a deep depression on Tuesday evening and is likely to become a severe cyclonic storm and cross the Odisha-West Bengal coasts in the early hours of October 25 with a wind speed of 100-110 mph gusting to 120 mph, according to the IMD.

How is Odisha preparing for Cyclone Dana?

The government authorities and rescue forces have begun the evacuation of people from areas that are likely to be affected the most because of cyclone. To deal with the relocation of nearly 10 lakh people, multipurpose cyclone shelters, flood shelters, and other buildings have been identified and has been prepared for temporary relief camps.

Arrangements have been made for the provision of food, drinking water, lighting, sanitation and health facilities to the people to be evacuated to such shelters, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said.

Most vulnerable West Bengal, Odisha districts to cyclone Dana

According to IMD forecast, fourteen districts in Odisha are likely to bear the brunt of cyclone Dana: Angul, Puri, Nayagarh, Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Ganjam and Mayurbhanj. In West Bengal, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, and Purba Medinipur, along with coastal areas and neighbouring districts like Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Jhargram, and Hooghly, will witness the worst impact of impending cyclone.

Cyclone Dana live: In the wake of Cyclone Dana moving closer to Odisha-Bengal coast, the West Bengal authorities have begun evacuating more than 1,00,000 people in coastal areas, reported AFP citing  West Bengal state government minister Bankim Chandra Hazra 

"Authorities have ordered the shutdown of all educational institutions" in nine districts of the state until Sunday, he told AFP.

Cyclone Dana live: In its latest update, the IMD on Wednesday gave an update on Cyclone Dana landfall. According to the weather forecasting agency, the cyclonic storm is likely to make landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra port in Odisha early Friday.

Umashankar Das, senior scientist at the regional meteorological centre in Bhubaneswar, said, “Based on the trajectory of the system, it is anticipated that Cyclone ‘Dana’ will make landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park in Kendrapara district and Dhamra port in Bhadrak district."

Cyclone Dana live: The Indian Air Force transported 150 NDRF personnel and relief materials to Bhubaneswar using two aircraft.

"The state has identified over 3,000 vulnerable locations (villages) across 14 districts, primarily along the coastal belt, and started evacuation procedures. Approximately 10,60,336 people are likely to be evacuated before Cyclone Dana makes landfall early Friday," PTI quoted a senior official from the Special Relief Commissioner. The official also added that arrangements have been made to protect lives and property.

Cyclone Dana live: As the cyclonic storm is inching towards the Odisha-West Bengal coast, the government has deployed nearly 288 rescue teams across districts vulnerable to Cyclone Dana.
