Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was left with serious injuries following a single punch to his head. Officers were alerted to the incident which took place at around 2am on Sunday, October 20, on Derry's Cross, close to the side of the Revolution's nightclub and the zebra crossing.

A group of four young males were seen behaving in an aggressive fashion and security staff ejected them from a nearby venue. The young men continued to behave aggressive, remonstrating with door staff and at one point pushing over a passing woman.

A man in his 30s is understood to have remonstrated with the four men while attempting to tend to the woman. CCTV footage and door staff bodyworn video footage acquired by police is understood to have shown one of the men circle behind his victim and punch him to the jaw, knocking him out.

The man then fell and was unable to protect his fall, striking his head on the pavement. He was treated at the scene by door staff and paramedics before being raced to Derriford Hospital. Police have said he was treated in the Intensive Care Unit for a suspected bleed on the brain.

He has been described as being in a stable condition but has suffered what police have said were "significant facial and head injuries" and remains in hospital at this time.

Officers who attended the scene later arrested three men - aged 20, 22 and 24 - on suspicion of wounding without intent and a four man, said to be 23-years of age, remains outstanding.

A police spokesperson said: "We know from CCTV footage that there were a large number of people in the area at the time of the incident. We want to hear from anyone who saw any part of the incident and can assist us with our ongoing inquiries."
