In an unprecedented display of bipartisan solidarity, former congresswoman and Republican Liz Cheney joined Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris at an event titled “Country Over Party” at the Royal Oak Music Theater. The event, moderated by former California First Lady Maria Shriver, was focused on bridging political differences and defending democratic values.

Cheney, known for her opposition to former President Donald Trump, first endorsed Harris earlier this month. During the event in Oakland, Michigan, she rallied fellow Republicans to focus on the country’s democracy rather than political division.

During the discussion, Harris addressed major bipartisan policy issues, including gun control, which has been a divisive topic between the left and right political groups. Harris highlighted her support for the Second Amendment while advocating for safe gun use, a viewpoint she has reiterated several times throughout her campaign. Harris also addressed the crowd, focusing on her bipartisan efforts to unite the nation in her “New Way Forward” vision. She noted that the next president of the United States needs to value the Constitution and its democracy and put the American people first.

Cheney, a staunch conservative who has not voted for a Democrat since Gerald Ford’s 1976 campaign, told the crowd that the stakes were high in the 2024 election and emphasized that Harris was “supremely qualified” to take on the role of president. She called for a united front by crossing party lines to “protect the nation’s integrity.”

In her closing remarks, Harris outlined her vision for a “new generation of leadership” and shared her commitment to defending vulnerable populations, drawing from her early career as a prosecutor. She also referenced the economy and her plans to provide people with equal career growth opportunities.

“I am a pragmatic capitalist, and I believe we have to invest in America’s economy and industry, as well as entrepreneurs who need the most support, not just to get by but to get ahead,” Harris said.

The event marked a significant moment as Harris ramped up her campaign efforts in swing states like Michigan, aiming to build broad support through bipartisan collaboration.

When asked about her thoughts on the phrase “A New Way Forward,” Cheney commented that it was about the Constitution and supporting its core values rather than differences in opinion.

“When you think about America and the beacon of hope that we have been for so many years and how tremendously enriched we have been by the communities of immigrants who want to come here and build a life. All of that depends upon fundamentally defending the rule of law, fundamentally defending our Constitution,” Cheney said. “But what I will say is that if people are uncertain, if people are thinking, ‘Well, you know, I’m a conservative. I don’t know that I can support Vice President Harris,’ I would say I don’t know if anybody’s more conservative than I am, and I understand the most conservative value there is, which is to defend the Constitution. It’s having a president who will listen and say, ‘I’m not necessarily sure I agree with you on this issue, but let’s talk about it. Why do you want that policy? Why do you believe that?’ Someone willing to honor and respect all perspectives and points of view, and there’s only one candidate in this race who does that.”
