'Important Day For Muslims': Owaisi On SC Ruling Over AMU Minority Status, VC Says 'Honour Judgment'

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi welcomed criticised the BJP after SC's judgment on AMU's minority status and demanded increased funding for AMU and Jamia Millia Islamia.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday said that the Supreme Court's judgment on the minority status of Aligarh Muslim University has upheld the right of minorities to educate themselves. 

A seven-judge bench headed by outgoing Chief Justice DY Chandrachud on Friday overruled the 1967 judgment that said the university cannot be considered a minority institution since it was created by an act of Parliament. 

In its judgment, preserved in February this year, the apex court deferred the question of the university's minority status to a fresh bench.

Reacting to the order, Owaisi said that it was an important day for Muslims in the country. 

"The right of minorities to educate themselves has been upheld. I congratulate all students and faculty of AMU today, he said in a post on X. The Hyderabad MP also took a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party saying "All the arguments of the BJP were rejected." 

Further attacking the BJP, Owaisi said it has opposed the minority status of the university all these years. "What is it going to do now? It has made every effort to attack AMU and Jamia, and our right to even run madrasas. BJP must introspect and go for a course correction," he said. 

Owaisi also demanded to raise the budgets for Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia saying the two universities "have consistently performed well in national rankings." 

"The Modi govt should take this judgement in its stride. It should support AMU as it is also a central university. Jamia gets ₹3L per student, AMU gets ₹3.9L per student, but BHU gets ₹6.15L," his post read.

AMU Vice Chancellor Naima Khatoon said, "We honour the judgement" adding that the next course of action will be discussed with the legal team. The Public Relations Officer at the university, Omar Peerzada also upheld the judgment and said: " For now, we are dedicated to maintaining academic actions, nation-building, and inclusivity."

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) and the All India Shia Personal Law welcomed the apex court's decision. 

"I think SC's decision will go a long way in deciding the minority status of AMU. I think all the historical facts are before us and we will certainly put those before the 3-judges bench," said AIMPLB member Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahali. 

Yasoob Abbas, General Secretary of All India Shia Personal Law hoped that the the three-judge bench "will give a favourable judgement to continue the minority status of Aligarh Muslim University..."
