Majorca holiday horror as tourists plunge through viewing platform

The tourists had climbed on to a concrete building, the roof of which acted as a viewing point, when it gave way and they plummeted some 10ft down below rubble.

Seven holidaymakers have tragically fallen through a concrete viewing platform on the popular tourist island of Majorca. Six of the tourists were injured, with two sustaining serious injuries, during a sight-seeing trip that ended in them being buried under rubble.

The terrifying incident occurred last night in the village of Randa, known for its stunning views over the island. The French tourists had climbed onto a concrete building, the roof of which served as a viewing point.

They all fell approximately 10ft through the roof when it collapsed, resulting in some of them being trapped under concrete debris for several hours. A comprehensive investigation is now in progress while emergency services continue to work at the scene.

Numerous personnel worked for around two hours yesterday until they managed to rescue all the tourists from the rubble. Some of the injured were able to ascend a rescue ladder, but two had to be lifted out vertically on stretchers, one complaining of leg pain and the other suffering a back injury.

The French tourists, all in their 60s, were visiting the area as part of a group from a tourist agency. They were reportedly standing on the concrete cistern at road level when, for reasons currently unknown and under investigation, the roof gave way beneath them, causing the seven tourists to fall inside, a drop of about three metres.

The Civil Guard of Llucmajor and Algaida, along with local Police of Algaida, six firefighter teams from the parks of Llucmajor and Manacor, members of Civil Protection of Algaida, and at least four ambulances were all present at the scene. "The rescue operation lasted until 9.10pm," reported the island newspaper Cronica de Balearics.

"The work has been complicated to extract two of the victims. The firefighters have required the presence of a truck with a ladder, which they have parked in the middle of the road. After stabilising it, they have stretched the ladder, as if it were a boom truck, so that the firefighters have been able to go down to the hut with stretchers."

Police sources noted just a few metres from this viewing point there is a cliff, known as Es Morro den Moll, with a drop of more than 120 metres. The affected tourists were trapped a few metres from this precipice, in the hollow of the building.
