Inside Donald and Melania Trump's 26 year relationship - full timeline explained

Donald Trump is set to return to the White House following his victory in the 2024 US Presidential Election, with his wife Melania Trump by his side.

The Republican comfortably defeated Democrat candidate Kamala Harris to be re-ellected as the 47th President of the US, after winning several key swing states – Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Georgia.

The business man will take to office on January 20th 2025, along side wife Melania Trump - marking another chapter in their longstanding relationship.

During election night, Trump took to the stage in West Palm Beach, Florida to give a speech to his supporters, stopping half way through to thank his family and most importantly his wife Melania. He also praised her recent novel, Melania: A Memoir, calling it the top-selling book in the country.

But who really is the woman married to the president-elect?

Melania Trump is a Slovenian-American former fashion model, born in Slovenia in 1970 before moving to New York in the late 90's to pursue her modelling career.

First meet

The couple first met by chance in 1998 at a New York City fashion week party. Although Trump had already brought a date to the party and newly divorced from previous wife Marla Maples, he still asked Melania for her number.

Melania recalled in a 2016 interview with Harper's Bazaar that she wasn't immediately impressed when Trump asked for number. “He wanted my number, but he was with a date, so of course I didn’t give it to him.”

Instead, she asked for his number instead. “I am not giving you my number. You give me yours, and I will call you.” She remarked “I wanted to see if it was a business number."

Trump ended up giving her all his numbers, including his office and phone number, which impressed Melania.

Brief split

The couple had a brief breakup in 2000 when Trump tired his hand at politics for the first time by attempting to secure the presidential nomination for the Reform Party. Although when Trump gave up his Reform party race the couple reunited.

The marriage

Trump proposed to Melania in 2004 at the Met Gala event in New York City, which came as a complete surprise to Melania. The two married the next year at a ceremony in Palm Beach, Florida, whilst the reception was held at Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate.

The pair stayed in the Mar-a-Lago estate for their honey moon.

On March 20, 2006, the couple welcomed their only child together, son Barron Trump. He is known as 'Little Donald' by his mother who has tried to keep her son out of the public limelight the best she can.

Trump has four children previously to other marriages, two sons and two daughters.
