It is believed the man had been reported missing 100 miles away from where the body was found. The death is not being treated as suspicious but the case has been referred to the police watchdog.

An image from the scene shows an emergency service vehicle parked on the road, reports StokeOnTrent Live.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "Officers searching for a missing man from Northamptonshire have sadly found his body in his car on the A50. The man’s car was located on the A50 eastbound in Creswell. Sadly, the man was deceased. His family have been informed.

"We are not treating the death as suspicious and a file will be prepared for HM coroner. A referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct."
