Bonfire Night thugs smash up swanky motors at Edinburgh car dealer in spree of violence

Bonfire Night yobs smashed up a car dealership in Edinburgh last night during a night of violence across the city.

Luxury motors were trashed at Macklin Motors Hyundai showroom on Calder Road in the Sighthill area of the capital.

Thugs rampaged through the forecourt on a shameful night of disorder. Workers at the dealership arrived today to a trail of destruction with brand new display cars vandalised.

Cops have launched a probe into the vandalism at the wrecked dealership as a mass-clear up takes place across the city.

Pictures from the scene this morning showed the extent of the damage, with back windows and windscreens left in bits. Some cars were so badly damaged, workers could be seen taping over the open windows.

As well as several brand new Hyundai's being smashed up an Audi A1 was also spotted with its back window smashed in. Officers were spotted at the showroom taking statements from shocked dealership staff.

Macklin Motors bosses were unable to provide the cost of damage to the cars but said they were assessing the wreckage and that they were working alongside police on the matter.

A spokesperson for Macklin Motors said: "We’re assessing the damage to the vehicles and are working closely with the police on the matter.”

Last night the Record reported how disorder broke out across the Sighthill area, with Niddrie and Moredun also falling victim to chaos. Riot cops were called to deal with violence as youths launched fireworks and other projectiles at emergency crews and passing traffic.

Alarming scenes saw yobs aim fireworks at a petrol station on Calder Road just along from the Macklin Motor garage. Cops locked down the road last night, with buses diverted from their usual routes as 'terrifying' gangs armed with 'fireworks and bats' marched through the area.

Police have vowed to identify Bonfire Night thugs. Fire crews were also attacked whilst they attended numerous incidents across Edinburgh.

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Mairs, Gold Commander for Operation Moonbeam said: “I firstly want to recognise the outstanding courage and professionalism of all of those emergency service workers who put themselves in harm’s way to keep communities safe.

“Their actions ensured that some of the challenging scenes we witnessed this year did not escalate into mass disorder, on the scale of what we experienced last year.

“Nevertheless, the levels of violence and aggression police officers, fire service and ambulance service personnel faced in some areas was wholly unacceptable and a significant investigative response is now underway to identify each and every one of those involved and bring them to justice.
