The bodies of two British nationals have been discovered in their hotel rooms on the Greek island of Crete. A 71-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man were found dead in Hersonissos, a resort town favoured by UK holidaymakers.

The pair were both found on Wednesday but police are not treating the incidents as being related, according to reports from the Greek press.

The woman's son reportedly came across her lifeless in their room, prompting emergency services to rush to the site after being alerted by the hotel staff. Sadly, she was pronounced dead at the scene, reports the Mirror.

A few hours later, in another hotel within the same town, the British male was also found unresponsive. Despite being quickly transported to hospital by ambulance, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Greek authorities have indicated that both of the Brits had previous health concerns. Autopsies are underway with an aim to cast "light" on the circumstances surrounding each death.
