'I accidentally made huge mistake with my son's name – I'm worried he'll be bullied'

A mum has taken to the internet to ask for advice after realising she accidentally made a huge mistake with her son's name - and is worried he'll be bullied because of it

A mum has caused a stir online after sharing that she unwittingly named her son after what's been alleged as a 'white supremacy group', fearing he might face a lifetime of mockery and bullying.

She was shocked to learn about the association when another mother at a playgroup brought it up.

Taking to Reddit, the concerned mum posted: "I LOVE my son's name but I worry he's going to be bullied because I didn't know about this. My husband and I named our son Odin. I have always loved the name and wanted to name my son that."

"He's 18 months old and last week I took him to a drop in play group and had another mother mention to me that she's surprised I named my child after a white supremacy group. I was 100% unaware of this and now I can't stop thinking about how I have caused him a lifetime of trauma and bullying. Can someone tell me if I ruined my child's life."

The Odinic Rite or Odinism is reportedly a white supremacist movement that worships the Norse god Odin, restricting its membership to only white individuals and promoting Heathenry as the ancestral faith of the Indo-European peoples.

Odin, a figure well-known beyond Marvel fandom, is the Norse deity associated with wisdom, healing, death, royalty, the gallows, knowledge, battle, sorcery, poetry, frenzy, and the runic alphabet. His name, derived from the Old Norse word óðr, embodies meanings such as 'inspired,' 'fury,' and 'frantic,' alluding to divine inspiration or rage.

People responding to the post were quick to reassure the mum that they had never heard of the religion and would only associate the name with the famous Norse god, Odin. One person responded: "White supremacists love Norse mythology, but you can't let those mouthbreathers run your life. And you can't let them ruin Norse Mythology."

"Take it, keep it, if anyone asks, assert the importance of stopping those people from doing more cultural appropriation of a mythology that has already had too much stolen from it. Encourage your child to wear it with pride as well, with pride and with the ability to communicate himself when the time comes about it as well."

Another person chimed in: "I have a nephew Odin and I've never heard this. No way will this ruin his life! If they see your kid and automatically think White Supremacy group that's a them problem."

A different mum shared: "Oh my gosh! My son, Odin, is 23 months and I also stumbled across the same epiphany when he was about 6m old! ! I first learned of odinism while reading about the Delphi murder trial. At that time I was so worried that this case would become national news centered around this hate group."

"I contemplated switching his name to Owen/Orson/etc. luckily, the white supremacy group hasn't come up at all, and I don't think it's known by many. My husband is Scandinavian and I really bonded with the idea that his name relates to the god of poetic frenzy. I think we, and our Odins, will be just fine."
