'Legacy' DWP benefit claimed by 1.6 million people to be scrapped

The DWP's Employment Support Allowance is one of six benefits being phased out and replaced by Universal Credit

The Government is set to scrap a benefit known as Employment Support Allowance (ESA), which approximately 1.6 million people in Britain rely on, often due to being unable to work because of health issues. This benefit is among six 'legacy' benefits that are being gradually eliminated in favour of Universal Credit (UC), streamlining several benefits into one system.

ESA recipients were alerted through migration notice letters sent out in September, instructing them they have a three-month window to switch to UC or risk having their current benefits cut off. With the deadline looming, inaction could lead to payments ceasing in December, potentially affecting Christmas finances.

Individuals receiving ESA have been urged to register for UC promptly to prevent any payment disruptions. Their migration notices, or the online resources available, will guide them through the necessary steps. The Government's large-scale shift of claimants onto UC involves writing to each recipient individually and assuring everyone that the amount received under UC should not be less than what was previously granted.

Other legacy benefits being phased out include Housing Benefit, Income Support, and Tax Credits. The clear message from the Government is: "Move to Universal Credit if you get a Migration Notice letter. As one or more of your benefits will be ending soon, you need to move to Universal Credit," reports Birmingham Live.

"To continue receiving financial support you must claim Universal Credit by the deadline date given in your letter. This is three months from the date the letter was sent out."
