Mitsotakis Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Middle East at MED9 Summit

by · iefimerida

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has called for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza, warning of an impending humanitarian catastrophe in the region.

Speaking at the MED9 summit on October 11, 2024, in Paphos, Cyprus, alongside leaders from nine southern EU nations, Mitsotakis emphasized the urgent need for restraint to prevent further escalation. "The situation in Gaza has reached nightmarish proportions," he said, stressing the importance of avoiding a new conflict front in southern Lebanon.

During the summit, which brought together leaders from Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Spain, and Portugal, Mitsotakis condemned Iran’s attacks on Israel and warned that such actions could destabilize the entire region. He reiterated Greece's call for a ceasefire to avoid another humanitarian tragedy and urged international actors to uphold regional peace and security.

The MED9 leaders echoed these concerns in their joint declaration, urging an immediate cessation of hostilities and the protection of civilians.
