Cyclone Dana effect: Orange alert in four Kerala districts, yellow in 7 others

Cyclone Dana's impact was felt in Kerala, too, as India Meteorological Department issued an orange alert in four districts, and a yellow alert in seven others.

The effects of Cyclone Dana making landfall along Odisha’s shore was felt in Kerala, too, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert in four districts. According to the IMD Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kottayam and Idukki were expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.

IMD also issued a yellow alert in seven districts: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Palakkad, Malappuram and Kozhikode.

According to the Met Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, heavy to very heavy rainfall was likely to occur at isolated places in Kerala over the weekend. There were likely to be thunderstorms with lightning at a few places in the state.

Typically, in orange alert, anywhere between 115 - 204 mm of rainfall could happen. This can lead to flooding in low-lying areas, streets, and streams could swell or even overflow.

Cyclone Dana, which made landfall on Odisha, has been identified as a ‘severe cyclonic storm’ in which typical wind speed is between 89 and 118 kmph.

Last year in December, a similar severe cyclone storm, Cyclone Michuang, made landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
