The situation remains tense in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district after the violence that broke out following the killing of a 22-year-old man during a Goddess Durga idol immersion procession.

Fresh incidents of violence were reported from the district's Nakawa village, where unidentified men torched a few shops and homes late Monday night. The accused also tried to torch a religious structure. However, the situation was brought under control after the police force reached the spot.

According to a local official, more than 50 police personnel were present at the spot to maintain the law and order situation.

The last rites of 22-year-old Ram Gopal Mishra, who died during the violence that broke out in the Mahsi tehsil on Sunday, were performed amid heavy security, on October 14.

Mishra, a resident of the village, was part of the Goddess Durga idol immersion procession. He was hit by a bullet and was rushed to a hospital where he died during treatment.

Scores of people, some armed with sticks, walked in the funeral cortège of the man amid cries for justice from the family and others on Monday, as tension escalated with shops being burnt down and angry crowds out in the streets.

About half a dozen people were injured in stone pelting and firing following the death of Mishra. Internet services were suspended in the district following the breakout of the violence.

Senior police officials, including Uttar Pradesh's ADG Law and Order, Amitabh Yash, reached the spot to bring the situation under control. Senior police officials were also camping in the district to maintain the law and order situation.

Four teams of the Special Task Force (STF), 12 companies of PAC and police officials from neighbouring districts have been deployed in Baharaich to maintain the law and order situation.

Four STF (Special Task Force) teams have been deployed in the affected areas. These teams are stationed on the front lines, equipped with bulletproof vehicles.

According to sources, three people have been arrested in connection with the killing of Mishra and a case has been registered against six identified and 24 unidentified people under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections related to murder and other offences.

Around 30 people have been detained in connection with the violence that followed Mishra's killing. Police raids were on to arrest Salman, who is among the named accused in the case.

In its investigation, the police seized bricks, stones, and sticks on the roof of the accused.

AKHILESH YADAV CALLS FOR PEACE, QUESTIONS GOVERNMENT

Meanwhile, terming the incident "unfortunate", Samajwadi Party chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav called for maintaining law and order in the district.

"I appeal that all those involved in the incident should take steps towards maintaining law and order. It is an unfortunate incident. The government should have made proper arrangements before the procession. They should have seen that there was proper security and along with that, they should have supervised what was being played on music systems. It is the fault of the government," the Kannauj MP said while speaking to the media.
