Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday met Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday at his residence in Delhi, a day after the BJP stunned the Congress to win for a record third time in the Haryana Assembly polls.

The meeting came amid the possibility of Nayab Singh Saini being asked to continue in his post after the BJP's success in Haryana, where it won a majority with 48 of 90 Assembly seats.

The Haryana Chief Minister is in Delhi where he will be meeting the senior BJP leadership. He is likely to consult with the party's high command on finalising his new Cabinet, news agency PTI quoted sources as saying.

On Tuesday, the BJP came from behind to defeat the Congress and ended up with its best-ever haul of 48 seats, dashing the grand old party's comeback attempt in the Haryana Assembly polls. Proving wrong exit polls which predicted a comfortable Congress win, the BJP is set to form the government in the state for the third consecutive term.

Nayab Singh Saini contested from Ladwa constituency, defeating Congress's Mewa Singh by 16,054 votes.

The Congress, which was once leading in the early trends of counting, finished with 37 seats. The INLD won two seats and three Independents too emerged victorious.

The AAP, which contested solo after failed seat-sharing talks with the Congress, drew a blank. The JJP, which won 10 seats in 2019, also failed to open its account.

Thanking the voters, Nayab Singh Saini said that people had "put a stamp" on the government's policies under the leadership of PM Modi.

PM Modi spoke to the Haryana Chief Minister and praised him and the BJP for the victory in Haryana. The Prime Minister said all communities voted for the party due to good governance.
