The woman was arrested after police received a tip-off that she was travelling on train number 05446, enroute to Bihar's Chhapra, and was carrying a large quantity of cartridges of .315 bore.

The Government Railway Police on Wednesday arrested a 20-year-old woman at the Ballia railway station in Uttar Pradesh and recovered 750 cartridges from her.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) GRP Gorakhpur Range, Savi Ratna Gautama said that the police received a tip-off that the woman was travelling on train number 05446 and was carrying a large quantity of cartridges of .315 bore. The train was enroute to Chhapra in Bihar, police said.

"A young woman was sitting on the seat of the train and had kept a trolley bag under her seat. When she was questioned about that trolley bag, she denied it was hers. When the bag was searched, 750 live cartridges of .315 bore were found in it", the DSP said.

During interrogation, the accused woman revealed that she was taking the bullets to Chhapra and was supposed to hand the over to someone there, police added.

The bag was given to her by one Ankit Pandey, who is a resident of Karimuddinpur police station of district Ghazipur, the woman told the police during questioning.

The woman, identified as Manita Singh, is a resident of Nadihar village of Uttar Pradesh's Mirzapur district, Subhash Chandra Yadav, GRP in-charge at Ballia, said.

"The young woman is being arrested and sent to court and further legal action is being taken. It is also being alleged that these cartridges could have been sold to Naxalites", the police said.

Meanwhile, the police have registered a case and have launched a probe into the matter. Efforts are also underway to hunt down Ankit Pandey, police added.
