A doctor has been arrested for allegedly raping a woman patient several times at his clinic after injecting her with a sedative which left her unconscious in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, sources said on Tuesday.

According to the woman's complaint, she had gone to see the doctor, Noor Alam Sardar, for some treatment. The doctor gave her an injection containing some medicine, which made her fall unconscious.

The complaint added that the accused raped the woman and took her pictures, which he used to blackmail her several times. The doctor also allegedly threatened to make her private photos viral on social media if she did not pay Rs 4 lakh as demanded by the accused.

As per the sources, the woman stays alone at her home in the Hasnabad area, while her husband lives out of the country for his work.

The victim later narrated her ordeal to her husband and when he returned to India, the couple filed a complaint against the doctor.

"My wife used to visit his clinic for her treatment. When she visited the surgeon’s clinic last time for consultation, she was asked to get an injection. She wasn’t willing to take that injection initially. But, the doctor convinced her to follow his advice for her speedy recovery. Following that, she was given the injection and she felt dizzy. Then, the doctor advised her to take a rest in a bed," the woman's husband alleged.

He said it was only when she regained consciousness that she realised that she was not properly dressed and had been raped.

"My wife tried to kill herself after being blackmailed by the doctor. I got informed by my neighbour and returned to my village to take further steps," the woman's husband added.

A case against the doctor was registered based on the woman's complaint and an investigation into the matter was launched, Basirhat Superintendent of Police (SP), Hossain Mehedi Rehman, told India Today TV.

"We immediately launched an investigation after getting a complaint from the woman. The prime accused was arrested within a few hours of the FIR being registered. The court has sent him to police custody. We are questioning him to gather further details of the case," the SP said.
