The term 'stray' will not be used for cows and other bovines in Rajasthan as its use is 'insulting' and 'inappropriate', the state government has said in an order.

Use of words like 'helpless' or 'destitute' should be encouraged for cows and other bovines that are roaming on their own.

Earlier in July, state minister Joraram Kumawat said cows in Rajasthan will not be called 'stray' and that the term 'nirashit' (destitute) will be used to refer to the animal, news agency PTI reported.

Kumawat, the Animal Husbandry and Dairy Minister, said the BJP government was working for the protection and promotion of cows and bulls.

He also said that the Chief Minister Animal Husbandry Development Fund will be constituted for cow welfare with a provision of Rs 250 crore.

The Opposition Congress had earlier alleged that the BJP merely paid lip service towards the state of cows in Rajasthan rather than doing anything substantial for their welfare.
