The Bharatiya Janata Party made history by becoming the first political party to win three consecutive terms in the Haryana Assembly elections. The party secured victory in 48 out of 90 seats. The main Opposition party, the Indian National Congress, won 37. Both parties contested all 90 seats in the election.

The BJP governed the state during the 13th and 14th Assembly terms and will continue for the 15th term. Previously, the Congress held the record for the longest period of governance in Haryana on two separate occasions. From 2005 to 2014, Bhupinder Singh Hooda served as the Chief Minister during the 11th and 12th assembly terms, holding the office for nine years and 235 days, the longest tenure by any Haryana Chief Minister.

Another long period of Congress rule was from 1968 to 1977. Bansi Lal and Banarsi Das Gupta served as chief ministers during the 3rd and 4th assembly terms, collectively governing for eight years and 344 days.

When the BJP came to power in 2014, Manohar Lal Khattar from the Karnal constituency became the Chief Minister on October 26, 2014, and held the position for nine years and 138 days till March 12, 2024, making his tenure the second-longest in Haryana’s history. After Khattar, Nayab Singh Saini was appointed CM. He held the position for 211 days. Following the BJP’s recent victory, the party’s time in power will extend to over 14 years, setting a new record for the longest period of governance in the state's history.

In comparison, the Indian National Lok Dal governed the state for five years and 224 days under the leadership of Om Prakash Chautala. Haryana’s first Chief Minister was Bhagwat Dayal Sharma of the Congress, who held the post for 143 days in 1966.

He was succeeded by Rao Birender Singh, the founder of the Vishal Haryana Party, who governed for 241 days from March 24, 1967, to November 20, 1967. In contrast, the Samajwadi Janata Party (Rashtriya) governed the state for only 15 days in 1991, the shortest tenure.
