Viola Davis Narrates Kamala Harris’ ‘Mother’ Campaign Video
· Rolling StoneWith Election Day less a day away, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has released a campaign video highlighting her mother Shyamala Gopalan’s legacy, with actress Viola Davis providing narration. The clip, titled “Mother,” discusses the Harris’ mother, an Indian immigrant who arrived in the U.S. at age 19 and became a cancer researcher and raised two daughters, Kamala and Maya Harris.
“Something cracks open inside you when you become a mother,” Davis says in the video. “You realize long after you’re gone, these children will be your legacy.”
Her mother’s principles, such as to “believe in themselves” and to “stand up for others,” led Harris to become a prosecutor in the Nineties, the California attorney general from 2011 to 2017, the California Senator from 2017 to 2021, to the U.S. vice president.
“She says every worker should be able to provide [for their families] with dignity, that’s your right,” Davis continues. “Every generation should do better than the last, that’s your legacy. Every American should be able to buy a home, start a business, and save enough to invest. It’s time for a new generation of leadership, one of optimism and a belief in a better future for all Americans.”
The video also features Beyoncé’s “Freedom,” the anthemic track off Lemonade that has served as a theme song throughout Harris’ campaign. The Democratic candidate first used the “‘Cause a winner don’t quit on themselves” single, with Beyoncé permission, during a speech at her Wilmington, Delaware, campaign headquarters and again for her first campaign ad in late July.
The EGOT winner expressed her support of Harris in a July social media post, following President Joe Biden’s departure from the race and his subsequent endorsement of Vice President Harris.
“This daughter of Shyamala, this daughter of the American story, is ready to lead us forward,” Davis adds in the trailer.
