Election Results Live Analysis: With Congress predicted for a clear majority, a poll defeat will deal a blow to the BJP, but no party has formed the government in this state for three consecutive time.

Assembly Election Results 2024 Live Analysis: As per latest trends for the 90 assembly seats in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, exit poll predictions are looking shaky. While Jammu and Kashmir seems to be going Congress-National Conference’s way, things are tight in Haryana, where Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is defying exit poll predictions, poised for a historic third term.

The mood in Haryana: Exit polls had projected a clear majority for Congress, but BJP’s win will mark a first for Haryana, which hasn’t seen any party form the government for three consecutive times. Within the Congress, the stage is set for the declaration of a Chief Ministerial face should the party secure a victory. For now, though, Bhupinder Singh Hooda is staring at a big jolt, with BJP making inroads in Jat-dominated constituencies falling in the ‘Hooda bastion’.

In Kashmir: The National Conference (NC) and the Congress have jointly fought the J&K Assembly elections, with NC headed for a clear majority, as per latest trends. The Mehbooba Mufti-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for whom the stakes were particularly high, has failed to make a dent in the polls. Independents and smaller parties — tagged by some as the BJP’s proxies — are also failing to make a mark.

Election Results Live Analysis: AAP makes maiden entry in Jammu, Mehraj Malik leads in Doda

Springing a surprise, the Aam Aadmi Party is set to have its maiden entry into the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly as its candidate Mehraj Malik is leading in Doda by 4,770 votes from BJP’s Gjay Singh Rana at during the last round of counting in Doda.

The AAP had shown its presence in Chenab Valley region of Jammu province when Malik had for the first time organised a massive rally in Doda town in March 2022.

Malik, a member of the Doda District Development Council, has often been in news for carrying of protests against the local administration. Accordingly, he is facing police cases for locking the offices of some revenue officials or blocking roads. --Reports Arun Sharma

Leading in only Rajouri (ST) of the 43 Assembly constituencies, Congress stands wiped out in Jammu province. However, its leading margin from nearest BJP rival Vibodh Gupta is only around 2,500. There is still two rounds of counting left in the final outcome of the results.

In Jammu South's R S Pura constituency, former minister Raman Bhalla, who was locked in a keenly contested electoral battle, was trailing from BJP’s national secretary Narender Singh by 325 votes. Election Results Live Analysis: Why independents, smaller parties failed to make a dent in J&K

The trends suggest that the smaller parties which got tagged as BJP’s proxies and the independents - the BJP relied heavily on them - have failed to attract the voters this time. Surprisingly, Engineer Rashid’s party has failed to take the lead even on a single assembly segment. Rashid’s brother, Sheikh Khurshid Ahmad is also trailing from Langate, the seat represented by Rashid twice in 2008 and 2014. The tagging of these independents and the smaller parties has been a key reason for their failure to make a mark in these assembly polls. Altaf Bukhari’s Apni party that failed to take-off after its was founded in 2020 has failed in its last chance of redemption. The party is unable to take lead on any seat and even its founder and president Altaf Bukhari is trailing behind the National Conference candidate Mushtaq Ahmad Guroo. --Reports Naveed Iqbal

Election Results Live Analysis: Haryana may be slipping away, what went wrong for Congress?

The Congress that was confident of returning to power in Haryana by ousting the BJP government after a decade was on the edge Tuesday as the BJP crossed the halfway mark in early trends, upsetting the grand old party’s calculations.

Though Congress leaders argued it was too early to count it out as only one-third of the votes had been counted, it was far from the sweep they had expected.

Behind the scenes, a blame game is waiting to begin, according to party insiders. The party will now be back to the drawing board. And there are many questions to be answered: was it politically wise to put all the eggs in the Bhupinder Singh Hooda basket, how did the open tug of war between the Hoodas and Kumari Selja for the Chief Minister’s post play out, were there lacunae in the selection of candidates (Hooda’s detractors have been claiming that he cornered a lion’s share of the tickets) and was the party overconfident and complacent?

Election Results Live Analysis: PDP's Iltija Mufti concedes defeat - a look at her electoral journey

PDP's Iltija Mufti, next in line for the Mufti family in J&K’s politics, was the first to concede defeat as results rolled out on Tuesday. She was trailing against NC’s Bashir Ahmad Veeri by just over 4000 votes. This was Iltija’s first electoral plunge from the Bijbehara seat that has previously been represented by her grandfather and former J&K chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

In a hard fought campaign, Iltija invoked the party’s legacy in “fighting for the rights of the people of J&K” and how they paid the price for their alliance with the BJP in 2014. The party has long argued that the voters in Jammu had put their weight behind the BJP in Jammu, in the 2014 elections, and that mandate deserved to be respected. Thus, paving the way for the PDP-BJP coalition.

A fierce critic of the BJP, Iltija was elevated as media incharge for her mother and party president Mehbooba Mufti last year. While Mufti remained steadfast on her word not to contest assembly polls with J&K as a UT, the party fielded Iltija in this election. --Reports Naveed Iqbal

Election Results Live Analysis: As per trends, BJP making inroads in 'Hooda bastion' in Haryana

The trends indicate the Congress getting a jolt in the Jat-dominated 14 assembly seats of southern Haryana. These seats fall in the “Hooda-bastion”, due to influence of senior party leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda among Jat voters here.

These 14 seats fall in three districts-- Sonipat, Rohtak and Jhajjar. The trends show that Congress was leading on eight seats whereas BJP was in the leading position in four seats. Independents were leading on the other two seats.

This scenario is different from 2019 when Congress had won 11 seats in this belt. Then, BJP had won only two seats while Independents had won one seat.

In this this region, Hooda's supporters had declared him as “bhaavi mukhya mantri” (future CM) in their election campaign. --Reports Lalmani Verma

Election Results Live Analysis: What do numbers look like in J&K now?

Though BJP appears to be on way to outperform its 2014 performance when it had won 25 seats and formed government in coalition with the PDP, trends suggest that it will be difficult for it to re-enter corridors of power this time.

While the NC is leading in 42 constituencies and Congress in 10, the BJP was ahead in 26 segments. The PDP was leading in five, J&K People’s Conference (2), and independents (7).

In the 95 member house including five to be nominated by the Lt Governor, one needs 48 members to form the government.

Election Results Live Analysis: BJP, Congress in close contest in Ambala Cantt

The former State Home Minister and senior BJP leader Anil Vij is tied in a tight contest in Ambala Cantt, a seat he has wrested six times. This time around, Vij, who openly staked claim to the top post after the BJP declared the siting CM Nayab Singh Saini as their CM face, is facing stiff completion from Congress’s Parvinder Pal Pari as well as the independent candidate and Congress rebel Chitra Sarwara.

Interestingly, Chitra, daughter of Nirmal Singh, Congress candidate from Ambala city, had come second in the 2019 assembly elections. Chitra, who rejoined Congress early this year after leaving AAP, had thrown her hat in the ring for the party ticket but was denied due to the party’s one family one ticket principle. This has made it a tight contest not just for Vij but for the Congress candidate as well. Other contenders from the seat include Indian National Lok Dal’s Onkar Singh, Aam Aadmi Party’s Raj Kaur Gill, and Jannayak Janta Party’s Avtar Singh.

Leading in just three seats, PDP has failed to make a mark in its south Kashmir stronghold as well where it is leading only in two out of 11 seats.

One of the reasons for PDP’s dismal performance is the perception in the valley that the party can’t come to power and it is better to rally behind an alliance - National Conference-Congress- that has better chances to win.

The PDP’s alliance with the BJP in 2014 that was seen as a betrayal of the popular vote in Kashmir has also contributed to the PDP’s worst ever performance.

Election Results Live Analysis: Will Hindu-dominated seats of Jammu be key to govt in J&K again?

Observers feel the Jammu division, especially Hindu-dominated districts, will emerge as the key in the power corridors of the UT.

BJP: The party contested all 47 seats in Jammu province and is banking on the votes of the Pahari ethnic group and the Padari tribe, which were granted Scheduled Tribe (ST) status earlier this year.

Congress, NC: The Congress and NC contested 30 and 17 seats respectively in Jammu, and were engaged in “friendly fights” in four. Both parties are banking on the consolidation of Gujjar voters, who are miffed with the BJP for inducting the Paharis into the ST category and feel the move diluted political representation granted to them post the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.

Here are five things to watch out for in the poll results:

NC-Congress alliance: The National Conference (NC) and the Congress have jointly fought the J&K Assembly elections. Both are part of the Opposition INDIA alliance at the national level. Under their seat-sharing pact, the NC contested 51 seats out of J&K’s 90 as compared to the Congress’s 32 , with both partners also opting for “friendly fights” in five other constituencies.

PDP factor: The stakes are very high in the elections for the Mehbooba Mufti-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In the previous Assembly polls in 2014, the PDP had emerged as the single largest party with 28 seats. The party had then forged an alliance with the BJP to form a coalition government, but the BJP withdrew its support to it in June 2018 following which J&K has been under the Central rule.

Assembly Election Results 2024 Analysis: 5 things to watch out for in Haryana poll results

Here are five things to watch out for in the poll results:

Cong’s CM pick if it wins: A tussle between various chief ministerial aspirants within the Congress was seen even during the party’s campaign for the October 5 polls. Some of the party front-runners who have staked their respective claims, openly or obliquely, for the CM post include Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and Dalit leader Kumari Selja, AICC general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, and even Hooda’s son Deepender.

Fallout for BJP: A poll defeat would deal a blow to the BJP, but no party has formed the government in Haryana for three consecutive time. The BJP contested the polls under the leadership of CM Nayab Singh Saini, the party’s OBC face, and state party chief Mohan Lal Badoli, a Brahmin leader.
