Delhi News Live Updates: Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai on Friday expressed gratitude to Delhiites for “largely refraining from bursting firecrackers” on Diwali, which helped prevent the city’s air quality index (AQI) from slipping into the ‘severe’ category. “Thanks to the responsible actions of many residents who avoided using firecrackers, we managed to avoid a severe AQI reading,” Rai told PTI. However, he said that while most residents adhered to the ban, some still burst crackers, and the air quality could have improved further if the ban had been completely adhered to.

Mwanwhile, Delhiites woke up to dense smog as the city recorded an Air Quality Index of 361 in the “very poor” category at 7 am today. RK Puram recorded the worst air quality with an AQI of 398 in the very poor category followed by Sonia Vihar, Anand Vihar and Burari crossing 395 in the very poor.

Fire services received 300 calls: The Delhi Fire Services experienced a surge in fire-related calls this Diwali with more than 300 such incidents reported across the city, which is the highest in the past 13 years, an official said on Friday. “The figure marks the highest number of Diwali-related fire and emergency incidents in the past 13 years,” DFS chief Atul Garg said.

Rai thanked people of Delhi for stopping AQI from slipping to 'severe' category and said, "Some people burst crackers; Delhi's air quality would have improved more if it could be stopped."

Delhi Fire Services receive 318 fire-related calls on Diwali, highest in 13 years

The Delhi Fire Services experienced a surge in fire-related calls this Diwali with more than 300 such incidents reported across the city, which is the highest in the past 13 years, an official said on Friday. "The figure marks the highest number of Diwali-related fire and emergency incidents in the past 13 years," DFS chief Atul Garg said.

According to officials, the increase is attributed to the extensive use of firecrackers. The DFS, which had ramped up its readiness for the festival by deploying fire engines and personnel across the city, reported that most calls were received between 5 pm on October 31 and 5 am on November 1.
