Pictures of scene emerge as one person dies and 15 hospitalised after train crash in Wales

One man has sadly died following a collision between two trains in Wales, the British Transport Police has confirmed.

The tragic loss comes after emergency services raced to the scene of a low-speed collision between two trains on the line near Llanbrynmair, Powys shortly before 7.30pm on Monday. Network Rail and Transport for Wales said the incident involved the Transport for Wales 6.31pm service from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the Transport for Wales 7.09pm service from Machynlleth to Shrewsbury.

In a joint statement, Network Rail and Transport for Wales said the line was closed, reports Wales Online.

They added: "Our main priority is the safety of our passengers and colleagues, and we are doing all we can to support the emergency services as they respond to the incident. We would encourage passengers to plan ahead and check journeys before travelling via National Rail Enquiries."

In a statement, British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to the line near Llanbrynmair at 7.29pm to reports of a low-speed train collision involving two trains."

Emergency services rushed to the scene with firefighters, ambulance crews and members of the air ambulance all in attendance to treat any injuries that may have occurred. Initially, the collision was believed to have resulted only in minor injuries, with 15 passengers taken to hospital for treatment. However, it has since emerged that one person has tragically lost their life in the crash.

Images released from the scene show the scale of destruction in the aftermath, with one train carriage completely caved in from the force of the collision, even at low speed. Further images also showed emergency personnel still on site several hours after the initial impact, as they worked to secure the area and investigate what had happened, while also ensuring all passengers and staff were properly cared for.

At this time, no further details have been released about the identity of the victim, but their next of kin have been informed, the police said in a statement.

BTP Superintendent Andrew Morgan said: "We can sadly confirm a man has died following this evening's incident. We extend our deepest sympathies to his loved ones, alongside everyone else impacted and specialist officers continue to provide support.

Morgan said the BTP are working hand in hand with emergency services and the rail industry "to understand the circumstances leading up to this collision". He added: "Residents will see an increased policing presence in the area in the coming days as a result."
