Met Eireann has warned the public to expect weather warnings over the weekend as its meteorologists continue to monitor the possible development of a storm from Saturday night into Sunday morning.

A rare weather advisory has been issued for Ireland, with the national forecaster explaining that coastal flooding is possible due to "exceptionally high supermoon spring tides."

As well as that, Met Eireann has revealed that wind warnings should be expected from Saturday night and into Sunday.

Meanwhile, a low-pressure system that could quickly deepen on Saturday is being monitored as there is a risk of strong winds and potentially a named storm which, should it develop, is expected to be named 'Storm Ashley.'

Today, Friday October 18, is expected to be quite a wet and windy day as patchy rain and drizzle extends across the country through the morning, turning heavy in western areas and spreading eastwards in the afternoon. Highs of 16C are forecast in strong and gusty southerly winds. Tonight will clear up and there will be just a few showers, primarily in the western half of the country.

While Saturday will start brightly, conditions are set to take a turn for the worse as the weekend goes on.

A Met Eireann spokesperson said: "Much of the day on Saturday will be dry and bright with sunny spells and just a few passing showers. However, cloud will build from the south through the afternoon with rain developing in the southwest during the evening. Maximum temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees in moderate southwest winds. There is the continuing possibility of coastal flooding due to very high tides. Heavy rain will extend nationwide on Saturday night and strong southeast winds will develop along with gales at the coast. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees.

"Becoming very windy on Sunday. Rain will clear quickly to the northeast on Sunday morning to leave a day of sunny spells and blustery showers. More persistent rain will return to some western and northern areas during the afternoon with a few thunderstorms possible. Strong to gale force southwest winds will bring the potential for some disruption, especially in Atlantic coastal areas. There'll be the ongoing risk of coastal flooding due to a combination of high seas and spring tides. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees. Continuing very windy on Sunday night with clear spells and scattered blustery showers. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees."
