A woman has died after getting into difficulty while swimming at Portmarnock Beach in Dublin on Monday. Emergency services, including the Irish Coast Guard and a lifeboat, conducted a search before finding the woman, who was later pronounced dead.

A woman has died after getting into difficulty while swimming at a beach in Dublin on Monday.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Portmarnock Beach in north Dublin after a distress call was made that a woman had gotten into difficulty.

Irish Coast Guard Rescue 116 responded to the call along with a lifeboat.

There was also a cancelled approach for a Ryanair flight from Lanzarote to Dublin Airport to facilitate the helicopter's take-off.

One onlooker told Dublin Live: "There was a helicopter and a lifeboat called to Portmarnock Beach after a swimmer got into difficulty."

According to RTE, a search was carried out for an hour before the woman was found. She was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.
