Woman detained after incident in Exeter city centre

An emergency response was seen in Exeter yesterday evening, Thursday, October 31, following reports of a concern for the welfare of a woman.

Around 7.20pm, police were called to the area of Frog Street in the city. A woman was seen on the wrong side of the railings of an overbridge.

Officers spoke to the woman and she came down to safety shortly after 8pm. She was detained under the mental health act and taken to safety.

At the time of the incident, DevonLive was told: "Lots of emergency services on the city centre side of Exe Bridges. Frog Street is closed off by Exe Bridges and I think Fore Street as well."

Pictures from the scene showed police vehicles near the Holiday Inn Express. A number of roads were closed at the time, but were reopened around 8.15pm.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called at 7.20pm last night, 31 October, to a report of concern for the welfare of a woman in the area of Frog Street, Exeter, who was on the wrong side of the railings on an overbridge.

"Officers engaged with the woman, who came to safety shortly after 8pm. She was detained under the mental health act and taken to a place of safety.

"A number of road closures were put in place in the area while emergency services were on the scene and were lifted at around 8.15pm."
