A Brixham home has been completely destroyed by a late night blaze, the fire service has said. An investigation is set to resume today (October 13) into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service (DSFRS) were first called to reports of smoke and and a fire alarm going off at a property on Marina Drive at 9:37pm last night. Three fire engines were sent to the scene but firefighters called for back-up when they realised the scale of the inferno.

Smoke and flames were seen billowing from the mid-terraced property. Shortly before 11pm, people in the area were told to stay away and keep windows and doors closed. This warning was repeated at 12:25am.

In multiple social media posts, DSFRS said: "Due to an ongoing incident at Marina Drive, Brixham we advise local residents and businesses to keep doors and windows closed and to stay away from the area."

A total of six fire engines were eventually on the scene, with crews from across Torbay, as well as Dartmouth, Totnes and Buckfastleigh.

A report of the incident said: "Fire control received a call to reports of a fire alarm sounding with smoke in the premises. Upon this information control mobilised three fire appliances.

"Crews arrived and saw smoke and flames issuing from the building and quickly made up for another appliance shortly followed by requesting an aeriel ladder platform and two more fire appliances to help tackle the fire.

"Crews are currently on scene and tackling the fire with six Breathing Apparatus, two hose reel jets, two safety jets, one covering jet, three thermal imaging cameras, small tools, and one triple extension ladder."

At 6:45am, it was confirmed that the fire had been put out but that the house had been completely destroyed. In an update to their report, DSFRS said: "This incident is now closed. The mid-terraced property was completely destroyed in the fire. Fire investigation will resume later this morning."
