Met Office extends weather warning with thunderstorms set to hit Devon

The bad weather will continue tomorrow

The Met Office has extended a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms in East Devon until 3am on Wednesday. The initial warning predicted rainfall until midnight tonight; however, this has changed as heavy rain is set to continue throughout the night.

Terrible rainfall has hit Devon today. This afternoon, heavy rain moved across the south Devon coast, with Exeter and the surrounding area seeing as much as 32mm an hour falling. By 3pm, patches of heavy rain moved northwards, with Dartmoor expecting to see a lot of heavy showers throughout the afternoon.

The bad weather is due to the remnants of Hurricane Kirk, which blew over the Atlantic Ocean, losing power as it went. Although it is no longer a hurricane, the gusty winds and heavy rain are still anticipated to affect the country's weather patterns.

BBC weather revealed that heavy showers and a chance of thunder will continue this evening. Devon Alert took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to warn: "#Devon Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms for East Devon until 3 am, Wednesday, October 9. Please take care and drive to conditions."

The Met Office has predicted: "Showers and thunderstorms will north and east across southern Britain through the afternoon and well into the evening, before gradually clearing from the west. Whilst some areas will miss these, where they develop 20-30 mm of rain within 2-3 hours, with a small chance that a few places could receive 40-50 mm over a longer period - particularly across the southeast of the area this evening.

"Hail and lightning will be additional hazards, with a risk of temporary hail accumulations in places. In addition, heavy showers and thunderstorms will be associated with strong and gusty winds in the south of the warning area at times with 40 mph gusts possible."

What should to expect?

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a small chance that some communities become cut off by flooded roads
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
